Hiking through Fiery Furnace ARCHES NATIONAL PARK May 2007 - 36 photos
On the 30th of May, 2007, I spent my second morning at Arches National Park getting some more shots that I wanted to re-do for better lighting. At 9:00 AM I met with our group for the guided tour through Fiery Furnace, a maze of sandstone fins and slot canyons. This tour requires a park guide that you pay for. The guided tour cost $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. This hike is a bit strenuous and requires some climbing and scrambling. There are narrow ledges with drop-offs and much of the hike is in deep narrow canyons. Some places are very narrow.
It is possible to go into Fiery Furnace without a guide if you have been through before, but you still have to pay and sit through a lecture on protecting the ecology. If you think you can do it without a guide by using my map, be aware that it is mostly guesswork on my part and you could get lost. Many have gotten lost in there, so that's why they have a guided tour.
The hike is said to be about 2 miles in length and takes about 3 hours. It took us 3½ hours. My GPS tracker said we traveled 1.6 miles, but I lost tracking through part of the trip. The altitude change showed 456 feet. Why the long time? lots of scrambling and many lectures

Fiery Furnace, Arches National Park
The hike through Fiery Furnace isn't for everyone. If you are bothered by small tight places, or drop-offs, this may not be for you. But I think it is one of the greatest adventures I have ever been on. Besides the beauty and fantastic colors, it is a great challenge just to get through. I watched many people doing things that they had never done before and being very proud that they accomplished them.
If you have the time to look at these photos full size, using the slide show feature, you will get a real idea of what it is like in there. You just can't see the detail in the small thumbnail pictures. If you take a minute looking at each photo, the next one will be loading.
