FRARY PEAK HIKE, ANTELOPE ISLAND September 2006- 36 photos
On September 29th of 2006, Dale Wing and I went out to Antelope Island hoping to get photos of the Bighorn Mountain Sheep. We didn't see them anywhere so decided to climb up higher and look for them. We started out on the trail to Frary Peak, the Islands highest point, where I had seen some back in 2003. Sadly, we didn't see any of the Bighorn Sheep at all, so we just spent the day hiking and looking. We did get to photograph some Chukar Partridge and hawks. Frary peak isn't a very high peak, as peaks go here in Utah, but it is still a fairly hard hike. Parts of the trail are very steep, especially the last quarter mile. The trailhead sign warns, "This is a strenuous hike with difficult terrain, recommended for experienced hikers only". Frary Peak was named after George Frary who homesteaded on the Island from 1890 to 1897. The peak is listed at 6,596 feet above sea level and my GPS read 6,601. The trailhead sign claims the hike is 4 miles one way and gains 1750 feet, but my GPS showed 3.3 miles one way with a gain of 2070 feet.

I had done this hike before, back in 2003, but had forgotten how hard it really is. That last quarter mile to reach the top took a lot out of me. I decided that at my age of 70, I won't be doing this one again. Never-the-less, I am glad I did it. The view from the top is absolutely fantastic. You can see so much, (when the air is clear). You can see the Wasatch Mountains from the northern border of Utah clear down past Provo and of course the entire Great Salt Lake in all directions. The island has very few trees and is mostly grass. Because there is so little to gage size from, it is hard to judge distance when looking out across the Island. Sometimes the shore line looked a few hundred feet away, even though we knew it to be a couple of miles. Some of these photos will look that way too.

My photos were taken with a Canon EOS 20D, 8.2 Megapixel SLR Camera using a 17-85mm IS wide angle to 5x zoom. Many of these photos were taken by Dale Wing with his Canon EOS 350D, (Digital Rebel XT), 8.0 Megapixel SLR Camera also using the 17-85mm IS wide angle to 5x zoom. We both used EF 100-400mm Telephoto zoom lenses for close-ups. The original photos have been reduced in size and resolution and compressed to make them load faster. You are welcome to look at or download any of the photos. If you use them on any other webpage, please give credit and refer back to me.
