Snowshoeing Wheeler Creek Middle Fork
December 2010 - 36 photos

This is our first snowshoe outing for the winter. On the 4th of December, 2010, 6 of us went snowshoeing up in the Snowbasin area. Myself, my daughter Cheryl, Linda and her friend Tim, along with Bill, and Don. We started out from the Green Pond Trailhead, located along the new Snowbasin Road, and traveled down the Wheeler Creek Middle Fork trail. We crossed the old Snowbasin Road and turned right at the trail that goes up to the Maples, going down to Art Nord. We could have taken a shorter route through Ice Box Canyon, but there were restrooms at Art Nord, so some wanted to go that way. From Art Nord we continued on down Wheeler Creek Canyon to Ogden Canyon, where we had left some cars for shuttles, to get back to the top.

Looking west, we came down from the left side and climbed to this saddle.

It wasn't the kind of day I would prefer for good pictures, being extremely overcast, but it was the only day we could all get-together. We were lucky that it didn't rain until we finished. This was a first time experience for 4 of the group. Don and I are the only ones that had been snowshoeing before. The others were very anxious to get out and try this, no matter what the weather was like.

Most of this trek was down hill, except for one part where we had to climb over a saddle getting to Art Nord. Going down through Ice Box Canyon would be a way around that, and probably cut off a half mile as well. We walked 5.57 miles and changed altitude by 1,592 feet.
