SNOWSHOEING WHEELER CREEK
from the Maples to Ogden Canyon
March 2013 - 54 photos
On the 1st of March, 2013, Cheryl, Marlene, me, and Thomas went out for another Snowshoe hike. There hasn't been much snow this year, and not as much as I really like to have for a good trek, but the others wanted to go since it may be the last chance we get.
We decided to go over to the Maples area north of Snowbasin and take the Wheeler Creek trail down through Ice Box Canyon to Ogden Canyon. We went down along the Middle Fork of Wheeler Creek a few weeks ago, which connects to this trail about half way down. The girls like hiking down hill along the streams, as we can go farther without getting so tired. Well, I like it too. This was a first time for Thomas in this area, and he seemed to enjoy it as well.
This hike was exactly 5 miles long, dropping down the mountain 1,452 feet in altitude.

We left my car at the bottom of Wheeler Creek Canyon, and drove up in Cheryl's car to Snowbasin, starting out on our hike about 10:00 AM. It took us 4 hours to complete the hike, including a stop for lunch. One nice thing about going down this trail is the overnight yurt we would pass. It is a rather large permanent tent put there by the Forest Service so that people can stay overnight. Inside is a wood stove, table, and some chairs. We were able to sit at the table and enjoy our lunch, dining in luxury.

After we finished lunch at the Snow Yurt, we decided to go cross country more inline with Ice Box Canyon. The actual trail runs up closer to the old Snowbasin Road, and is a bit longer, so we headed straight for the canyon.
The photos this time don't have much color. The day was very overcast until we were on the last leg of the trip, then after the sun did come out, we were in the shade of the high canyon walls.
