HIKING BALD MOUNTAIN August 2009 - 66 photos
Bill Joy and I went hiking on Tuesday the 11th of August, 2009, to the top of Bald Mountain in the Western Uintas. This mountain sits next to the highway going over to Mirror Lake. We even got some pictures looking down on Mirror Lake. The hike took 4 hours and 40 minutes, including the hour spent on top. 2 hours 20 minutes up, 1 hour and 4 minutes spent on top, and 1 hour 16 minutes coming down. The beginning altitude where we parked was 10,748 feet and according to my GPS the top of Bald Mountain was 11,968 feet. 32 feet shy of 12,000. The websites I looked at said it was 11,943 feet above sea level. most of the time my GPS shows the altitude higher than the maps show, and most of the hikers I have met say the same thing. One guy on Bald Mountain said so too, his GPS agreeing with mine. Anyway we climbed 1,220 feet in 1.25 miles, 2.83 miles total. It was a pretty good workout in the thin air.

We saw Mountain Goats up close on the hike going up. Then the view from the top was unbelievable. I have a lot of photos showing the many lakes and mountains peaks, some of those are panoramas. The panoramas are mixed in with the rest of the photos this time. On the way back in the car, we saw a cow moose. We also saw a big Bull Moose, but didn't get good photos of him as he entered some thick woods too quickly. One photo of him was quite blurry. I did get one of him in the woods.

To get to Bald Mountain, take SR 150 from Kamas Utah, or Evanston Wyoming, going towards Mirror Lake. At the top of the divide, Bald Mountain Pass, there is a parking lot on the west side, at the top of the big "S" curve in the road. Bald Mountain is pretty hard to miss.

My photos were taken with a Canon EOS 40D, 10.1 Megapixel SLR Camera and the Canon EFs 17-85mm IS wide angle to 5x zoom lens. I also used a Canon EF 70-300mm IS Telephoto for close ups. Some of these photos were taken by Bill Joy with his Olympus E620 SLR and additional lenses.
