Snowshoeing at Snowbasin
January 2012 - 36 photos
Saturday the 28th of January, we did a snowshoe hike. Cheryl, me, Marlene, and Don. We had no goal in mind, no special place to see, just went for a walk in the snow. We started at the high point along the Snowbasin Road, going up to what we call the flats. It's not really flat, but more so than the surrounding area. There are a lot of pines there, as well as quaking aspen, and scrub oak. Very pretty with the contrast of blue sky and white snow. We walked through the trees following no trail most of the time. Our general goal was to walk over to the lower Strawberry Gondola station, where they have restrooms and a deli.
Starting out above the Snowbasin road.
It had rained a couple of days before this, and then froze hard. We could walk on top of the snow, but it would break a little like thin ice. At one point one of our group broke through and fell deep, twisting an ankle, so we decided to head back to the car. On the trip down we followed the Strawberry Groomed trail back towards Snowbasin Ski Resort, and took the maintenance road down to the highway. Towards the end I left the others to go back and get the car, driving it over to where they came down that maintenance road.
We walked about 4 hours, only going 2.54 miles, climbing 384 feet. This was a short easy hike for a change.
Snowshoeing through the pines, about a half mile above the road.
