WINTER WILDLIFE in UTAH January 2008 - 36 photos
Winter Wildlife - Pictures of Deer, Wild Turkeys, some Elk, and both Golden and Bald Eagles.
On Friday, the 25th of January 2008, I went for a drive up Weber Canyon, through Morgan Utah, and up to East Canyon Dam. My brother-in-law told me that a few weeks earlier he had seen some wild turkeys and a few deer just below the dam. I have been wanting to find some wild turkeys, and hoped this would be the place. I am so glad that he told me, because thanks to him I found the wild turkeys, and more.
As I was driving through East Canyon, I saw quite a few deer along the hillside. They were scattered all along the east side of the road. While taking photos of the deer I saw what I thought was a large hawk flying above, but later when I tried to identify it, I found that it was a female Golden Eagle. What a day, getting all kinds of photos. Just before I reached East Canyon Dam I saw something runing though the snow and brush. Looked like turkeys. It was turkeys, two turkey hens. I stopped, got out and began taking photos of them and noticed a tom turkey up on the hillside as well. More great photos.

When I reached the Dam I saw a lot of people out ice fishing. Although I took some photos of them, I'm not including them here. In talking to a guy that was there, he said he had seen elk feeding up by Echo Utah, if I was interested. He told me where to watch for them so I drove back down to Morgan, took the Freeway up to Echo, then came back down the old road. At first I didn't see anything, but noticed some guys in a pickup truck looking up in the hills. The elk were there all right, but pretty far out. They were up high on the ridge top, a half mile away. Sure glad I have a big telephoto lens. As I drove farther along, I found some down in a canyon about a quarter mile off. Then I saw an old bull down lower and closer to the road. It looks like he was either hit by a car or attacked by a mountain lion, something bad anyway. He was limping along holding that right back leg up all the time. Poor old guy looked like he hasn't been getting enough to eat. While I was photographing the elk, I noticed an eagle land up on the hillside. As I watched, the eagle took off and I was able to get some photos of it too, even though it was a long way off.
Wow! did I have a great photo day! I never expected to find this much winter wildlife in one day. What are the chances? I took hundreds of photos and have placed a few of the best here on my web pages.
